The experts on NATO integration from the Dutch government held discussions regarding Georgia´s prospects towards the NATO membership with their Georgian counterparts at the New Rights (Conservative) Party office on June 30, 2006.
The meeting, which was organized by the US Embassy in the Netherlands, was attended by the New Rights Party, Republican Party and the representative of the Georgia for NATO non-governmental organization.
As the leader of NCP, David Gamkrelidze said the participants presented to the Dutch guests the details related to Georgia´s prospects for NATO membership as well as the problems the country faces from the authorities on its integration with the Alliance.
Gamkrelidze said that the opposition leaders had explained to the European guests that "Georgia´s integration with NATO is a unanimous desire of the Georgian population," however the impertinent steps taken by the authorities undermine Georgia´s progress towards NATO membership.
Shalva Pichkhadze, chairman of Georgia for NATO, the experts had not shared their opinions with regard to Georgia´s future membership in NATO with the participants of the meeting. "They were asking questions not on technical issues but more on fundamental issues," Pichkhadze said.
He also added that the goal of these kinds of meetings is for the NATO member states to better familiarize with the country, which desires its membership. |
