Pikria Chikhradze MP: Georgia is governed by clans

"Corrupt officials must be arrested not after their resignation, but while they are in power", New Rights MP Pikria Chikhradze said at September 24 press conference, one day after sacked Shida Kartli governor Mikheil Kareli was arrested on corruption charges.

"Batumi and Adjara are in the hands of the Varshalomidze clan; Samtskhe-Javakheti belongs to the Merabishvili clan; Kakheti to the Adieshvili clan; and the Education Minister Kakha Lomaia and State Minister Bendukidze both make millions. These issues must be addressed immediately, not in three years´ time," Pikria Chikhradze declared.

"The authorities arrest officials when they are not sharing their illegal wealth," Chikhradze charged.

Chikhradze also said that if the authorities deem it necessary, they will arrest ex-defense minister Irakli Okruashvili, "And if not, in this case, it [would be] obvious that Okruashvili will be under the influence of the ruling forces," she added.
